The Raindrops on Roses hat by MAGGIE MAE DESIGNS® can only be described as superbly elegant. It is a sophisticated design that celebrates the theme of the the ultimate floral gift – a dozen roses!
Sally’s History with “A Dozen Roses” Trim Design
Starting back in 2000 Sally created an innovative “Dozen Roses” trim design for a small chapeau offered in her Derby hat collection.
Over the winter, Sally decided that it was the time to bring this gorgeous trim style back. But this time, she needed a much grander hat frame to hold the larger roses and lavish leaf trimmings that she planned!
A New “Dozen Roses” Design Is Born!
So an extra wide brim hat design was chosen, measuring 21 inches from end to end. A luscious champagne dupioni silk was selected as the perfect fabric for the elegant foundation.
A total of a dozen roses were individually handcrafted for this design. Sally created them in varying shapes and sizes to reflect all the stages of a rose, from rosebud to full blossom.
Each rose was created out of alternating layers of red and crimson dupioni silk and red silk organza. No two roses, are quite the same.
And if you look closely, you will see that some of the roses are dotted with tiny “water droplet” beads (clear Swarovsky crystals). These were a moment of inspiration which came when the hat was nearly finished. Just in time for the chapeau to be named, “The Raindrops on Roses Hat”!
All of the roses are framed with leaves created in a mix of stunning green dupioni silks in shades of artichoke, green tea, pesto and peridot.
The smallest rose in this design is a tiny rosebud in red dupioni silk accented with miniature leaves.
A pleated red dupioni silk sash was fashioned to encircle the crown of the hat. Luscious, swirling layers of champagne tulle were handstitched over the brim to create a soft bed for the dozen roses.
Finally, Sally handcrafted three small bows in red dupioni silk. Carefully handstitched into place, they peek out from behind the tulle layers and roses!
